Las Meninas is a 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age.
It was cleaned in 1984 to remove a "yellow veil" of dust that had gathered since the previous restoration in the 19th century.
The cleaning provoked furious protests, not because the picture had been damaged in any way, but because it looked different.

Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss
Artist: Antonio Canova
Having been recently awakened, Psyche reaches up towards her lover, Cupid, as he gently holds her by supporting her head and breast. Antonio Canova's fine technique in carving marble contrasts their realistic smooth skin with the surrounding elements. Loosely draped around Psyche’s lower body, a sheet further emphasizes the difference between the texture of skin and drapery. Rough texture provides the basis of the rock upon which the composition is placed supplementing the distinctions of elements.

Diana is represented at the hunt, hastening forward, as if in pursuit of game. She looks toward the right and with raised right arm is about to draw an arrow from her quiver. Her left arm has been restored, and a deer has been added at her feet, although one might have expected a dog.[4] Her left hand is holding a small cylindrical fragment, which may be part of what was once a bow. She wears a short Dorian chiton, a himation around her waist, and sandals.
Dying slave

The Dying Slave is a sculpture by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo. Created between 1513 and 1516, it was to serve with another figure, the Rebellious Slave, at the tomb of Pope Julius II It is a marble figure 2.15 metres (7' 4") in height, and is held at the Louvre, Paris.
Winged Victory of Samothrace
Also called the Nike of Samothrace
Modern excavations suggest that the Victory occupied a niche above a theater and also suggest it accompanied an altar that was within view of the ship monument of Demetrius I Poliorcetes (337–283 BC). Rendered in grey and white Thasian and Parian marble, the figure originally formed part of the Samothrace temple complex dedicated to the Great gods, Megaloi Theoi. It stood on a rostral pedestal of gray marble from Lartos representing the prow of a ship (most likely a trihemiolia), and represents the goddess as she descends from the skies to the triumphant fleet.
Venus de Milo

The Venus de Milo is a 204 cm (6.69 ft) tall Parian marble statue of a Greek goddess, most likely Aphrodite, depicted half-clothed with a bare torso. The statue originally would have had two arms, two feet, both earlobes intact and a plinth; early sketches following the statue's rediscovery show part of the left arm and the plinth, though not the missing left foot, intact, but these were subsequently lost after the statue's rediscovery.

Sainte Anne, la Vierge et l'Enfant Jésus jouant avec un agneau, anciennement appelé La Vierge, l’Enfant Jésus et sainte Anne, est un tableau de Léonard de Vinci peint à l'huile sur un panneau de peuplier et conservé au musée du Louvre à Paris. Il a été réalisé dans le cadre de la création d'une « Sainte Anne trinitaire » : sa lente et complexe genèse remonterait à la toute fin du xve siècle pour ses premières études et deux premiers cartons — celui de Burlington House entre 1499 et début 1501 et celui de Fra Pietro entre 1500 et avril 1501, finalement écartés —, puis à 1503 pour les débuts de sa mise en peinture.
Mona Lisa

he Mona Lisa bears a strong resemblance to many Renaissance depictions of the Virgin Mary, who was at that time seen as an ideal for womanhood.[29] The woman sits markedly upright in a "pozzetto" armchair with her arms folded, a sign of her reserved posture. Her gaze is fixed on the observer. The woman appears alive to an unusual extent, which Leonardo achieved by his method of not drawing outlines (sfumato). The soft blending creates an ambiguous mood "mainly in two features: the corners of the mouth, and the corners of the eyes".

It is the home of many of the most known work of arts, including the Mona Lisa. A central landmark of the city, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the city's 1st arrondissement (district or ward). Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 72,735 square meters (782,910 square feet).

Venus de Milo and the Galerie des Antiques
The Galerie des Antiques The Venus de Milo can be admired today in the last of a long series of rooms where she stands in almost solitary splendour. The magnificent red marble decoration dates from the early 19th century and the reign of Napoleon I. In 1807, the emperor bought the prestigious art collection of his brother-in-law, Prince Camille Borghese. To house the collection, he commissioned the architects Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine to enlarge the recently created Galerie des Antiques.

Les premières œuvres d’art islamique sont entrées au Louvre à sa création en 1793. Les premières salles datent de 1893. À l’époque on appelait cet art « les arts musulmans ». Ces appellations renvoient non pas à un art religieux, mais aux territoires orientaux et africains de culture principalement islamique. Cette collection s’enrichit énormément au cours du 19e siècle et du 20e siècle à l’époque où Paris est la place mondiale du goût orientaliste. Le Louvre a présenté ces collections d’abord au sein du département des Objets d’art, puis aux côtés des Antiquités orientales.

The French Revolution (French: Révolution française [ʁevɔlysjɔ̃ fʁɑ̃sɛːz]) was a period of radical political and societal change in France that began with the Estates General of 1789 and ended with the formation of the French Consulate in November 1799. Many of its ideas are considered fundamental principles of liberal democracy, while phrases like Liberté, égalité, fraternité reappeared in other revolts, such as the 1917 Russian Revolution, and inspired campaigns for the abolition of slavery and universal suffrage. Its values and the institutions it created dominate French politics to this day.
Classical sculpture
Leochares: Belvedere Apollo
Classical sculpture (usually with a lower case "c") refers generally to sculpture from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, as well as the Hellenized and Romanized civilizations under their rule or influence, from about 500 BC to around 200 AD. It may also refer more precisely a period within Ancient Greek sculpture from around 500 BC to the onset of the Hellenistic style around 323 BC, in this case usually given a capital "C".[1] The term "classical" is also widely used for a stylistic tendency in later sculpture, not restricted to works in a Neoclassical or classical style.
